Alexandre Maglione

in a nutshell

“No matter how hard life may seem, never give up.” And in French: “No matter how difficult life may seem, never give up.”

‍

This sentence sums up my philosophy: no matter how daunting a challenge may be, I always seek to understand its underlying causes in order to find solutions—an approach that also guides my practice.

‍

Physical activity is the cornerstone of my life: I played competitive hockey from age 6 to 17 and soccer for four years; I ran cross-country in elementary and high school; and I’ve been weight training since I was 11.

‍

Physical therapy allows me to immerse myself in this world while helping people get back to the activities they love!

‍

You'll get along well with me if:

  • You're open-minded and aren't afraid to try new things.
  • You want to understand the ins and outs.
  • You enjoy being active, eating well, and traveling.

‍

I have a particular interest in:

  • Injuries related to any sport, but particularly those associated with strength training (CrossFit, Hyrox, functional training), hockey, and running.
  • Chronic pain, no matter where it occurs, but especially chronic lower back pain, given my personal experience with this type of pain.
What has your career path been like?

Having been an athlete my whole life, I’ve been injured several times and had some exposure to physical therapy as a teenager. I thought this profession looked really interesting! However, I ended up studying human physiology. After completing my bachelor’s degree in physiology at McGill, I realized I didn’t want to work in a research lab. So I switched to physical therapy for two main reasons: my fascination with the human body and the opportunity to have a direct impact on people’s quality of life.

‍

Before becoming a physical therapist, I worked part-time as a trainer at a functional training gym (Gym L’Armure) for five years. I loved interacting with people and helping them maintain good physical health. Alongside that job, I also worked part-time as a pharmacy technician (ATP) for six years. That experience allowed me to understand how community pharmacies operate and to learn a great deal about different types of medications.

‍

Once I was enrolled in the physical therapy program at UdeM, in addition to my studies and part-time jobs, I served as a student representative for three years and worked as a student physical therapist for the Carabins football team for three seasons (2023–2025).

‍

After earning my master’s degree in physical therapy from the University of Montreal in 2026, I now draw on my diverse background: coaching has taught me how to motivate people to be active and has given me a solid repertoire of exercises; my studies in pharmacy have provided me with a more holistic view of health; and my own injuries remind me of what the people I treat are going through.

Continuing education?
  • Taping Training (October 2023) - Patrick Gendron
  • Sports First Responder (March 2025) - John Boulay

  • UdeL MOOC - Concussion: Prevention, Detection, and Management in My Community (June 2025) - Pierre Frémont and Pierre Langevin
What do you find most rewarding about your job?

To restore hope to people who are living with pain, sometimes for years. Seeing someone resume an activity they had stopped doing is what motivates me the most, and it’s the main reason I became a physical therapist. There’s nothing more rewarding than helping the people who come to see me regain a great quality of life!

Have you ever been injured?

Yes, time and time again: shoulder, knee, wrist, concussions, sprained ankles… and my worst one, a back injury. With the others, I always knew I’d recover, but the back pain was so intense that I seriously wondered if I’d ever get over it. I’ve learned that the intensity of pain doesn’t always reflect the severity of an injury. The most important lesson I’ve taken away from this is that, in the vast majority of cases, you can pull through even when you’ve lost hope—especially when you’re in the good hands of physical therapists!

Three funny facts about you

- When I was younger, I played hockey with Joseph Veleno, who now plays in the NHL and is a former Montreal Canadiens player.

‍

- In 8th grade, I broke a 20-year-old cross-country record at Jean-Drapeau Park, even though I hadn't trained in track and field.

‍

- I love board games and video games. I have at least thirty board games and many more video games: one of my favorites is The Witcher 3.
